Leading Humanitarian Programmes Effectively (3 days)

Effective responses to complex emergencies require exceptional leadership skills. The ability to deliver quality outputs on time, achieve the targets, put the right structure, systems and practices in place is a crucial component of effective humanitarian response.

What does the workshop cover?

Ever developed a proposal and want to know how to work out what staffing structure will deliver the most effective results? Ever wondered how to motivate staff, how to positively challenge your bosses and colleagues and how to develop a business case? Ever had problems with talking with someone who seemed to be difficult? H ere is how you will find out how and what suits you, your style and your organisation.

The course uses tested business approaches to develop leadership skills but it is aimed at and developed firmly for the aid workers and associated public sector workers, including government. Using mainly scenarios and active learning this course will enable participants to develop and practise new approaches, will teach you how to make decisions, balancing the pros and cons of particular courses of action. It will let you practise how to negotiate and influence and show you how to continue to develop your skills.

What will I learn?

The course will develop a broad understanding of the ideas behind how we develop strategies, manage, lead and deliver programmes and then will let you practise skills in a series of scenarios. You will come away from the course with new skills and abilities that will be directly and immediately applicable to your current role and to your future. It will improve performance in your current role and enhance your professional development in humanitarian programme management area.

Who should attend?

The course is designed for humanitarian and development professionals who have managed staff in some capacity and wish to develop their skills and abilities to lead staff and teams and to deliver against targets.
